Summer Lunch Program at West End Park

(an approved site of the East Texas Food Bank)

Nearly 70% of children in MISD receive free/reduced cost meals during the school year.  During summer months many of those children in our community do not have access to nutritious meals.  You can change a child's life by serving meals this summer in West End Park.

We need two types of volunteers:

  • Delivery/Distribution Teams - These teams of 2-3 individuals will pick up pre-prepared meals at the Boys and Girls Club (about 11:45 am) and bring them to the park where they'll help hand them out to children ages 1-18 who come to the park to eat from 12 noon - 1pm.  Sign up for one day, one week, or one day each week of the summer - whatever fits your summer calendar.
  • On-Site Coordinators - We still need 2 more individuals willing to adopt one day of the week most weeks of the summer in order to ensure our program runs smoothly and to help with organizing volunteers on-site.  These coordinators will need to attend a very brief training before serving.  We also need an individual who can fill in occasionally while other coordinators are out of town.

Pray

Pray that God will send out workers – Jesus said that the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.  With busy schedules, it can be difficult to find those who are ready and willing to serve. Pray that God will call out individuals to take leadership roles in new ministries as they develop. Pray that God will prepare hearts at FBC Marshall and in our community to answer “yes” when God opens new doors for ministry.

Buckner Opportunities:

Support our ETEAM (East Texas Ethiopia Aid Mission) - FBC Marshall is one of 11 churches in East Texas involved in a collaboration with Buckner, Bright Hope, and believers in Ethiopia addressing concerns such as justice, evangelism, education, ministry to children and relief work.  Each year a number of teams from East Texas provide support to the ministries in Ethiopia.  Call the church office or click here for more information about upcoming trips in 2011.  Prayer support is also of vital importance during these trips, sign up to be a prayer partner.

Shoes for Orphan Souls (SOS) – Shoes for Orphan Souls is a ministry of Buckner International, providing new shoes and socks to orphans and at-risk children in the United States and throughout the world. From conducting shoe drives to humanitarian aid trips, SOS offers hands-on opportunities to individuals, groups and organizations wanting to transform lives. Since 1999, 2 million pairs of new shoes and socks have been distributed to children in 68 countries.  Consider hosting a shoe drive for your friends and neighbors, coworkers, or your Connection Group.

Through Buckner you have incredible opportunities to care for those who need to feel a part of a family.  Consider becoming a Foster Parent – In Texas there are close to 30,000 children living in foster care.  Right here in Harrison County we have a need for additional foster parents who can provide a safe and loving environment. Buckner provides the training and resources you need to care for a foster child.  For more information visit: www.beafamily.org.  Your family can become a place of love and support for a child in need.
